Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips on how to keep your plants' healthy while on vacation.

  • You can ask a friend or family member to water and care for your plants during your absence.
  • You can hire someone to come over and take care of them for a day or two.
  • You can purchase an automatic watering system that will keep them alive while you are away.

How I did it?

Recently, I had a vacation plan for 5 days. I was worried about how to water my plants. So, I came up with a simple, cost-effective plan to water my plants when they need water.

Previously, I’ve tried an option like hanging water in a polythene cover above the plant pot and made a small hole with a pin so that drop by drop water is released into the plant pot. But the disadvantage with this option is, whether or not your plant needs water, drop by drop water is released from the polythene cover into the pot. On the other hand, I had to tie too many polythene covers to all my plants. This is another disadvantage.

Considering these disadvantages, I came up with a new option to water plants. A few hours before I was about to leave for my vacation, I’ve filled a water tin with water and tied ropes in it, and inserted another end of the ropes into all the plant pots (deep inside the pot).

If I leave it just like that, I will not have control over the rope hanging inside the water tin. So, to make it work, I’ve dropped a small stone into the water tin and tied it to the rope so that it stays in the water steadily.

Whenever plants need water, they suck water through the rope automatically. It does not release excess water to the plants.

Only point to note is, water tin should be at higher level than the plants.

Guess what, this worked like a charm.

After 5 days, I am back home and not even a single plant is dry. All the plants are green and healthy.

Here comes the screenshot of my setup. I know this isn’t visually appealing but showing this picture, you would get an idea on how I’ve set it up.
